Presentations in Marital/Relationship Therapy
by Ashutosh Prabhu Dessai
Sometimes one of the spouses/partners seeks consultation to understand if their partners behaviour is normal or whether it is due to mental illness and how to deal/cope with it and if it is remediable.
Sometimes one of the spouses presents to confirm whether his suspicions about the fidelity of his spouse are genuine or whether he/she is overreacting. Such doubts cause him/her great stress , loss of sleep , disturbance in mood , poor concentration etc.
Sometimes one of the spouses/partners denies sex to the other partner, despite desiring it oneself, due to interpersonal issues, thereby living like siblings or flatmates and experiencing great chagrin. There may be requests to advise whether divorce would be a better option to living like this.
Sometimes one or both partners tell each other to divorce him/her but actually dont do it leading to lot of turmoil, confusion uncertainty and distress as to whether this is said in jest or whether it is serious and may actually happen in future and if so why.
Sometimes previous failed love affairs lead to uncertainty and lack of confidence about ability to satisfy partner after marriage, leading to repeated postponement of marriage.
Sometimes one partner catches the other having an affair and asks therapy to help cope with emotional distress and help spouse not to repeat the behaviour.
Sometimes male partners request therapy describing their marital life as living hell with unpredictable and child like behaviour of spouse indicating need to assess the female partner while at other times female partner requests therapy for non physical ill treatment by male . In addition to both scenarios contributory familial factors may be required to be considered.
Sometimes some clients find it difficult to commit to marriage and breakup the relationship when marriage is imminent or proposed, and seek therapy for depression over the breakup or when their ex partner finds another partner and contemplates marrying her. Sometimes they might even make contact with the new person in their ex's life and share or spread their grief.
